Nerve Treatment on a Baby Tooth

It’s not uncommon to see a crown on a baby tooth. Baby teeth are very important as they preserve the space for the permanent teeth. If a baby tooth is lost prematurely it can affect the way the permanent tooth erupts. This can create bite issues, affect the way the jaws and face develop and even lead to speech problems.

If your child has a large cavity or infection in a baby tooth is always best to save the tooth as long as possible and let the body naturally loose the tooth. For baby teeth that have cavities or infections nerve treatment may be recommended. It’s a simple procedure and the good news is that for children it’s no more difficult than having a simple filling done. Typically the infected part of the nerve is removed from the tooth and a baby crown is placed on top.

In some situations there may be no choice but to remove the baby tooth. If this is the case we encourage all children to have some type of space maintainer placed. Space maintainers are simple orthodontic appliances that sit in the mouth to ensure there is room for the permanent teeth to erupt. After a few days the child will not even notice it’s there.
